Racing Preview of World Cup Regatta in Hyeres, FRA

Only 99 days left until the 2012 Summer Olympic Games begin in London, UK! Here’s a preview from LaserPerformance of what’s up next for Laser and Radial sailors as competition heats up toward the 2012 Olympics.

The next major event for all the Olympic sailing classes is Semaine Olympique Francaise in Hyeres, FRA beginning on April 21. Hyeres will be the 4th of 7 World Cup Regattas: Sail Melbourne, Miami OCR, Princesa Sofia in Palma, Semaine Olympique in Hyeres, Delta Lloyd in Medemblik, Sail for Gold in Weymouth and Kiel Week.

Just as competitors saw for most of the racing in Palma, Hyeres can be a very light wind venue. However, Team Maclaren member Debbie Capozzi remembers the first race week she sailed in Hyeres was 20-25 knots the entire time. Hyeres is known for the mistral, a strong wind from the NW affecting the eastern Mediterranean coast of France. If the mistral comes through during race week, racing could turn out to be more like the windy World Championships in Perth. The current forecast suggests that racing may begin in the tail end of the mistral that’s coming through this week. Here’s hoping…

Master helmsman Glenn Bourke and crew of Sunshine Coast sailors Rod Jones and Greg MacAllansmith overcame a relative short preparation to finish fourth in the recent Zhik World Laser SB3 championship in England.

Before the series began they were understandably ranked as a possible chance to finish with a top 20 result but they expressed their class to overcome the considerable handicap of limited big fleet racing with their chartered SB3 Club Marine.

Glenn Bourke a former Australian Olympian and multiple World Champion had a distinct purpose in mind when he elected to join the dual Audi Australian IRC class ocean racing champions Rod Jones and Greg MacAllansmith for the World championship.

Nick Rogers to sail SB3 at Port Stephens and Worlds

Tasmania’s World Dragon class sailing champion Nick Rogers is among the latest high profile skippers to focus their attention on winning the 2011 Audi Australian SB3 Dart championship at Port Stephens in March.

Rogers, who was invited by the Australian fleet founder Rod Jones of Mooloolaba to contest the Wild Oats trophy series at Hamilton Island in a chartered boat in August, is among three World champions who have signed up to gain class racing experience before a high standard fleet compete for the World championship at Hamilton Island in December 2012.

Beijing Olympian Nathan Outtridge and seven times World champion Glenn Bourke, winner of three consecutive Laser dinghy championships plus the distinction of representing Australia at the 1992 Olympics, have joined the SB3 fleet in recent weeks.
